Recently, Erie County (PA) Warden Mike Holman shared a powerful example of why innovation matters. During inmate intake, officers discovered that an arrestee had concealed a firearm inside a personal bag—something that had been missed during the initial arrest. While the individual was screened with a body scanner, the bag was inspected using a property X-ray system, revealing the hidden weapon before it entered the general population.
While property X-ray systems are commonly used to screen visitor belongings, Erie County recognized the value of a multilayered security strategy and extended that same protection to inmate intake—demonstrating how innovative thinking can strengthen facility safety.
